Here is something old and lovely. A tiny antique coral pendant charm. In the shape of a Roman soldier / Centurion helmet. It dates to the Victorian era, circa 1840s to 1880s, and is the sort of thing one would have picked up in Italy during their Grand Tour of Europe, a rite of passage during the 17th through mid-19th centuries for those in the upper class. A novelty item for tourists, in Italy the charms were commonly worn as amulets for protection against the evil eye, a superstitious tradition that dated back to ancient Rome. Coral amulets were also used extensively in Spain, although according to an 1849 publication titled "Gatherings from Spain", Naples, Italy was "the head-quarters for coral charms and amulets". By the 1850s, coral pendant charms had become a part of popular Victorian culture. Thanks to the expansion of the rail system, more people than ever before were able to travel abroad far easier than ever before which made coral souvenir jewelry no longer just a luxury trifle for the very wealthy. Women wore the little charms on chatelaines and bracelets, children wore them as pendant charms on strands of coral beads, and men wore them as pendant fobs on watch chains. The charms were produced in a variety of figural shapes -- pigs, chairs, slippers, figa hands, and more -- some examples of which can be seen on page 57 in the 1848 book linked below. This little coral charm is an unusual piece, a rare design carved to resemble a classic Roman helmet with crested plume.

The British Museum has a sizable collection of antique coral charms that were acquired by the museum in 1865, but among those no coral helmets were to be found. Michael in the collection of the V&A Museum. It was hand-carved from natural coral in a peachy orange color with subtle variation in color.

The bale ring is unmarked and tests as solid 18 karat gold, and the helmet measures approximately 1/2" x 3/8" with a 3/8 height. It likely appears larger in the photos due to the greatly magnified view, so please be sure to check the measurements? It's in excellent antique condition with little signs of wear commensurate with age. Please note this listing is only for the coral charm with gold bale ring...
